Superfoods

Interesting article on Superfoods. Superfoods just mean foods that are good for you.

There is so much hype out there. High-fat foods are labelled low-carb. High-carb foods are labelled low-fat. There is no way around simple education.

Plus this:
"The report also found that the government often stands in the way of people learning the health-inducing benefits of some products.

For example, juice makers can claim that cranberry products help maintain urinary tract health, but they cannot say cranberry juice cocktail prevents urinary tract infections. That claim is legal in France.

The makers of the butter-like spread Take Control had clinical studies showing it lowers cholesterol. But until they got approval from the Food and Drug Administration, they couldn’t put it on the label.

“They had to say something like, ‘Maintains healthy levels of cholesterol,”’ said Fergus Clydesdale, a food science professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst who headed the study.

“What does it mean? What’s a healthy level?” Clydesdale said. “That isn’t very good — matter of fact, it isn’t true. We knew the product lowered cholesterol.”

"It has been estimated that a healthy diet could prevent approximately 30% of all cancers."

"those who consumed low amounts of fruits and vegetables were twice as likely to have cancer compared to those who ate high amounts of fruits and vegetables. Recently, a study linked intake of fruits and vegetables with a reduced risk in breast cancer in woman in China. In this population based, case-control study of women in Shanghai, pre-menopausal women who ate more dark yellow-orange vegetables and more citrus fruits tended to have lower breast cancer risk. Fruit and vegetable intake also appears to have a protective effect against coronary heart disease. Approximately 84,000 women were followed for 14 years and 42,000 men were followed for 8 years. They found that people who ate the highest amount of fruits and vegetables had a 20% lower risk for coronary heart disease, and the lowest risks were seen in people who consumed more green leafy vegetables, and fruits rich in vitamin C. Not only may a diet high in fruits and vegetables help prevent heart disease and cancer, but it may also help protect against a variety of other illnesses. For example, a diet high in fruits and vegetables may help protect against cataracts, diabetes, Alzheimer disease, and even asthma."

Stopping the Childhood Obesity Epidemic

Young people, more than ever, are feeling the pressure to look trim and fit. But it's not just body-image issues that drive this trend. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the percentage of young people who are overweight has more than tripled since 1980. And obesity, the CDC says, is clearly tied to numerous health problems such as hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and many others. The problem doesn't just stop with overweight children, though. Lifelong eating habits are established in childhood according to the CDC. The result is that the U.S. is in a population-wide obesity crisis. [PRWEB Aug 29, 2005] more...

There's no comparison!

We produce more food than we need. To keep it from spoiling, it is highly processed and refined. In so doing, the thermolabile substances are destroyed. These foods contain calories but little, if any, nutrients.

Processed and refined foods will not allow for repair or growth of your body. more...

The brain is where poor nutrition is first felt. For instance, if you are deficient in iron you will feel depressed and irritable long before you develop anemia. But, if we rely on supplements, we're missing out on trace minerals and phytochemicals available to us only in whole foods. Your system works when fed properly and malfunctions when not!
